Desert Limes

Common name:    Australian Desert Lime

Botanical Name :  Citrus Glauca

Family:                   Rutaceae

The Desert Lime is a true citrus that has adapted over centuries to survive the semi-arid harsh Australian bushland. It grows in a range of soil types and can withstand extreme temperatures ranging from 50º C – – 12º C. It is the only citrus that is an xerophyte as it can drop leaves in drought and live by photosynthesis through the green on stems. Tree size, shape, height can vary in the wild. They can be slender and thorny up to 12 meters in height to multi stemmed dense tree 2-4 m. Young plants are thorny for protection from grazing animals but thorns become branches as the tree matures and have no thorns past kangaroo grazing height. Small white flowers appear in spring. Fruit is ready to harvest 8-10 weeks later when the green fruit develop a light yellow tinge. The fruit is small and can be round or oval in shape.

Flavours can vary slightly with different varieties but fruit always maintains the distinct refreshing piquant desert lime flavour. Fruit is highly nutritious with medicinal attributes. Stores well frozen. Use as ‘normal’ limes.
